I've never thought twice about my food cravings. Since my food cravings mostly involve candy and junk food, I thought they could just be attributed to my bag eating habits. However, as I was looking at Lauren Conrad's website the other day (I suggest you all to check it out...), one post caught my eye: What Your Cravings are Actually Telling You. I did more research, and today, I will share my findings with you.
If you're craving sugar...
Your blood sugar levels may be fluctuating, putting you at risk for type 2 diabetes.
What to Eat: fruit NOT candy
If you're craving chocolate...
You may have a magnesium deficiency (over 80% of the population does!).
What to Eat: dark chocolate (70%+ cacao), nuts, seeds, fish, or leafy greens
If you're craving salt...
Your adrenal glands are not working properly to help you deal with stressful situations and supply energy to your body. They may be releasing too much cortisol, a chemical that leads to cravings for salt.
What to Eat: nothing! Instead, do meditation exercises, yoga, or other stress-relieving techniques.
If you're craving red meat...
You may have an iron deficiency.
What to Eat: bean, legumes, prunes, figs, dried fruits
If you're craving cheese...
You may have a deficiency of fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and other diseases.
What to Eat: walnuts, wild salmon, flaxseeds
Also, keep in mind your cravings may have psychological or social causes. For example, if you have an especially bad day and you love the taste of chocolate, you may crave chocolate. Similarly, a certain kind of candy may trigger good memories, and if you nostalgic, you may crave that very food. Regardless of the cause, I hope this post helps you understand a little more about your food cravings!
