A Cake for the Cheap, Cheaters and Clever

NEWSFLASH: You can make a boxed cake mix taste like it is from a bakery.

It's true. I just did it. It is the cheaper way to look like you went shopping... or the cheater's way to claiming you made a cake from scratch. Whatever your motivation, there's no judgement here.

1. Start with your typical boxed cake mix. I used Betty Crocker's Super Moist Devil's Food Cake.

While most of the directions with remain the same, it is the ingredients that shift.

2. Preheat the oven to whatever the box says.

3. Pour the cake mix into a bowl.

4. Add an additional egg than the recipe on the box asks for. (e.g. the box said to use 3 eggs, so I put 4 eggs in)

5. Replace the water with milk, but the amount remains the same. (e.g. my box said to put in 1 1/4 cups of water, so I put 1 1/4 cups of milk)

6. Replace the oil for real butter and double the amount. (e.g. my box said to use 1/2 cup of vegetable oil so I used 1 cup or 1 stick of butter)

7. Beat until blended and pour into pan.

8. Bake for the same amount of time as recommended on the box.

9. Wait for cake to cool.

10. Frost. (I used store bought frosting)

11. Serve and enjoy without revealing anything!
