As someone who has issues with the leniency on gun control in the United States because of situations like this week's news of the week, another 22-year-old shooter went out on a shooting rampage, using three guns he legally obtained under his name. The shooter, Elliot Rodger, committed suicide after killing 7 - including himself - and injuring 13 outside of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The murders were not all in the same place, Rodger went out on a full rampage. Rodger started at his home where he stabbed three men to death only to take off immediately. Rodger then headed to a sorority house at USCB and shot three women, killing two. Following this incident, Rodger headed to a nearby deli where he shot and killed another man. After killing these 6 people, Rodger continued to drive through the streets of his hometown Isla Vista, shooting at pedestrians and hitting bikers.
The police found Rodger dead inside his crashed car after a chase-down. While the police shot Rodger in the hip to slow down, the fatal shot was fired by Rodger himself.
Rodger had actually met with the police at three separate points throughout the year. The first contact, Rodger claimed that he was a victim of assault. The police ruled that, in fact, Rodger initiated the assault; however, all charges were dropped. Secondly, Rodger claimed that his roommate has stolen candles from him, causing his roommate to be arrested for an overnight holding and subsequently move out. In April, the police were asked to perform a welfare check on Rodger, yet found nothing suspicious.
Rodger's entire thought process behind the attacks were discovered through the combination of his disturbing Youtube videos from his channel and an autobiographical 141 page manifesto, titled My Twisted World: The Story of Elliot Rodger, that he left behind. The entire novel opens with "Humanity... All of my suffering on this world has been at the hands of humanity, particularly women. It has made me realize just how brutal and twisted humanity is as a species. All I ever wanted was to fit in and live a happy life amongst humanity, but I was cast out and rejected, forced to endure an existence of loneliness and insignificance, all because the females of the human species were incapable of seeing the value in me. [...] This tragedy did not have to happen. I didn't want things to turn out this way, but humanity forced my hand, and this story will explain why". The manifesto revealed not only that the rampage was planned, but also the motivation and mental state of Rodger himself: he has never had a girlfriend.
At the time of the attack, Rodger believed that every person should be banned from sex so that he or she can feel the same pain and dissatisfaction of life that he felt.
