Bucket List: Do a Charity Walk

"Transforming Hungry to Healthy": The 46th Annual Project Bread 20 Mile Walk for Hunger

Project Bread works to raise hunger awareness, improve nutrition in Boston schools and support hunger hotlines in the Greater Boston area. With the support of 43,000 walkers and their collective fundraising of $3.5 million, the Project Bread 20 Mile Walk for Hunger 2014 was a success.

When Milton Academy started forming a team back in early April, we immediately became interested in signing up to walk. Both of us had always wanted to do some sort of charity walk and knowing that because we were on projects, time and energy would not be an issue, we went for it.

Eliza: I was actually really nervous about it. I am not an athlete whatsoever, so I a little worried about my fitness level. While walking 20 miles was not outrageously physically strenuous, the necessary mindset needed to walk for 7 hours straight definitely came easier to the athletes of our group. However, the cause was a great motivator not only is hunger an important local issue, but everyone other walker was there for the same reason you were, so you just did not want to give up. And while today, my feet have quite a few blisters and my shins are quite sore, the Walk for Hunger was something I will remember for a long time, and would consider pursuing again for sure in the future.

Daphne: Like Eliza, I was really nervous about the walk. Coupled with my cold, my soreness from my previous few days boxing made the day seem pretty intense. Nevertheless, I found the walk extremely worthwhile. Hunger isn't an issue that I think much about; it isn't nearly as publicized as many other ones. Yet, seeing 40,000 other walkers unite behind this one issue made its importance so much more clear to me. Signs along the 20-mile walk told me important facts that I had no idea about... Did you know that 11.4% of Massachusetts households suffer from hunger? That statistic is absolutely insane! I'm really glad I did the walk. Not only did I prove something to myself— I never thought I could walk 20 miles in one day— but I was able to learn more about a pertinent issue to my community.
